As Iraqi government forces, supported by Kurdish fighters, Sunni Arab tribesmen, Shia militiamen and air strikes from the United States led air coalition continue their offensive, an offensive designed to retake the besieged city of Mosul from Islamic State militants, the United Nations reports that horrific atrocities are being carried out by Islamic State militants.
Reports of militants using civilians as human shield in an effort to slow the advance on the city of Mosul are widespread. Furthermore and even more alarming is a report that in an effort to spread terror among the civilian population, the militants killed 15 civilians before throwing their lifeless bodies into a river.
Other reports filtering through from the UN include, civilians being forced marched between village to village at gunpoint, anyone not keeping up are shot. One such incident is a report off three women and three children shot-dead as they found it impossible to keep up.
Just what the Iraqi forces will find in the city of Mosul once they retake the city is anyone’s guess, but it is feared they will just find total devastation and human sacrifice.
