An ongoing attack at a five-star hotel in the Pakistani province of Balochistan is ongoing according to Pakistani officials.
Although reports are sketchy at this time, we do know that in the port city of Gwadar several gunmen stormed the five-star Pearl Continental Hotel at 16:50 local time (11:50 GMT).
The hotel a popular destination for both tourists and business people have evacuated the majority of guests to nearby gardens within Gwadar. During the evacuation it is believed that one security officer was killed, we have no other news regarding the guests.
The port city of Gwadar is the center of a multi-billion-dollar Chinese project which for reasons unknown has become the target of much displeasure within both the country and local communities, and in an area where militant groups are operating, every day tensions have been high for some time.
The area of Balochistan is Pakistan’s poorest and least developed area, and festering unrest has caused a rapid increase in insurgency with different militant groups vying for control.
Known insurgency groups operating within the confines of Balochistan include the Balochistan Liberation Army the Sunni Muslim extremist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and the Pakistani Taliban.
The separatist Balochistan Liberation Army has been quick to claim responsibility for this latest atrocity against Chinese investment within the area saying it is of little benefit to local people in the area.
