11 dead as deadly fire engulfs two ships in the Kerch Strait off Crimea

Russia has launched a major rescue effort to search for survivors, after an unexplained blaze erupted on two Tanzanian-flagged cargo vessels, following an explosion on a gas tanker, engulfed another in the Kerch Strait, just off the coastline of Crimea.

 

Eyewitnesses and rescuers report that sailors could be seen jumping into the freezing waters of the Black Sea desperately attempting to escape the blaze.

 

According to other reports #Russians who had launched a major rescue operation, have so far managed to save fourteen people all of whom were from the two merchant vessels, the Kandy and Maestro

 

So far, according to the AFP news agency, "no signal from either one of the two captains" had been received.

All survivors and the bodies of the dead will be taken to the #Crimean city of #Kerch
